    Description

    SCARCE ITEM!!  SUPERB COLOR MAP!!
This is USGS Professional Paper 328,
Geology of the Yankton Area, South Dakota and Nebraska.
Published in 1960, this is a scarce item. This large 124-page book delves into the geologic formations, landforms, and features of this area. It includes five large sheets, one of which is a superb large full color map of the area, with Yankton near the middle. The maps cover parts of
Yankton and Bon Homme counties, South Dakota
    , and
    Clay and Knox counties, Nebraska
. The map covers 584 square miles.
Formations in the area range from young glacial deposits to Cretaceous age rocks. There are also Precambrian rocks below the surface that are discussed as well. This area was of interest because of the variety of landforms in the area, and the contrast between the north and south sides of the Missouri river. The formation descriptions usually include a section on the paleontology if their were fossils found. Some of the additional sheets are well logs from oil wells in the region, that offer additional insights into the geology at depth. The treatment of the geology is very complete, and at 124 pages, that what you would expect.
This would be a great item for a local resident, historian, or armchair geologist looking to understand this interesting area better.
