Description
ONE OF THE SCARCER REPORTS!!This is USGS Bulletin 1046-C,
Uranium-Bearing Minerals in Placer Deposits of the Red River Valley, Idaho County, Idaho
. Published in 1957, this is an oddly scarce item for some reason. This is the first I've ever offered in years of this sort of thing. This report consists of a 12-page book and the original geologic map, which is in a pocket in the back of the book. The area is near Elk City, Idaho. Minerals discussed or mentioned in this book include:
Gold
Brannerite
Euxenite
Davidite
Betafite
Samarskite
Ilmenite
The uranium minerals were discovered in the course of gold dredging in the area, showing up in the heavy mineral concentrates in the dredge. It's an interesting story, and an unusual deposit. I learned a lot about dredging from reading it, as well as an explanation for the presence of uranium minerals in the area. Makes for pretty interesting reading for a short report, and the map does a nice job of showing the area of interest. Another cool thing is that the map is on a parchment like paper that is water marked with an eagle crest!
