  • Condition: This was originally issued in soft covers with the worst acidic paper and often they fell apart. This one is no exception. The front cover and spine wraps are gone. The back cover is present but detached and brittle. The Title page is torn and has come loose. Back and front of the remaining intact text block are lightly smudged. Binding is generally tight, but with some crackiness and looseness here and there. No marks in the text. Plates look great. A good (considering) example of this old report.

    This is USGS Bulletin 257,
    Geology and Paleontology of the Judith River Beds, With a Chapter on the Fossil Plants
    . Published in 1905, this is a rare item. This 174-page book comes complete with all eight plates of fossils. Two of the plates are of fossil shells. The other six are of fossil plants. There are also numerous plates of photos scattered through the text.
    The Cretaceous Judith River formation presented a number of unresolved issues in the bigger picture of the Cretaceous system in the region. This study, undertaken in 1903, looked at the formation in Montana and adjacent parts of Canada, and helped resolve some of the issues with age and composition. In the process they brought to light interesting, new, or significant fossils, which they describe in the text and with photos.
    The plates are pretty cool looking, especially the fossil plants. They would look great framed. I don't recommend that ordinarily because I don't like to see books dismembered for that reason. But when there are notable condition issues as with this one, it doesn't bother me as much. It is a driver of price in these old reports regardless.
    Overall, this is a cool, very complete report on this area, and a scarce item these days. To find it complete with all the plates is uncommon.
