    This is USGS Bulletin 1230-A,
    Mineral
    Resources
of the San Rafael Primitive Area, California.
Published in 1966, there can’t be many of these around. This report consists of the 28-page book and the original geologic map. It provides a nice overview of the geology and formations, the map being very helpful in making it understandable. The area covered is in the mountains north of Santa Barbara, quite a ways inland in the Coast Ranges, and covers about 220 square miles. Hurricane Deck and Big Pine Mountain are within the study area, and there are nice photos of these. The Sisquoc river passes through the area as well.
This is part of a series of reports that were done to see what areas qualified for preservation as wilderness areas. So they looked at potential for mining and other aspects. They took samples in many areas and tested for various metals of economic importance and the results are included.
This would be a great guide to the geology of this rugged area and helpful for any hikers, backpackers, mineral collectors, or armchair geologists wanting a better understanding this range.
