$ 30.62

Availability: 72 in stock
  • Country/Region of Manufacture: United States
  • Condition: Soft cover with typical wear. Notable corner bumping affects cover and text block. Covers at hinge line and spine are repaired and reinforced with tape, but the covers don't appear to have detached - just had some tears around them These huge reports suffered from not being well constructed for the heavy map pockets. There are rumpling and nicks around the the back cover. Pages and maps are unmarked and in good condition. Light abrasion to bottom of map pocket. A very good example of this old report in better than average condition for these. I recommend removing the maps when reading the text to reduce strain on the back cover.

    Description

VERY SCARCE REPORT!! ONLY ONE AVAILABLE!!
This is USGS Professional Paper 245,
Geology and Ore Deposits of the Boulder County Tungsten District, Colorado
. Published in 1953, this is one of the rare reports that is highly prized by historians and mineral collectors alike. It consists of the 199-page text and
all 27 of the original maps
. It is rare to find one of these complete, especially with all four of the original full color maps still with it.
The first map is a very large full color map, about 50x43 inches, showing the entire district.
    Nederland
is in the SW corner. See the first three photos. This map is exquisitely detailed.
Several maps are full color and are very detailed. They show
close up geology, veins and mines of the Beaver Creek area within the district. Numerous mines are noted by name.
One map shows an overview geology map that stretches from the tungsten district all the way to Boulder itself. In addition to the tungsten veins shown in red, this shows gold and silver veins in blue!
Another map shows detailed full color geology around the Nederland area. It is a beautiful map.
Photos 9-11 show the type of maps that make up the rest of the 27 maps in the set. They are typically surface and/or underground workings of specific mies. Most are black and red, showing veins, underground working, locations of shafts, etc. They are very detailed and there are a lot of them! Others have two colors in addition to black. Some are just B&W.
The text provides so much information it is hard to list it all. All the rock units are explained. General features and mineralogy of the veins are described. There are silver veins, gold-telluride veins, tungsten veins, and mineralized breccia bodies. The history and production of the area are discussed. That gets you to page 91. The remainder of the text is devoted to descriptions and discussions of individual mines and prospects throughout the district. It is a wealth of interesting information. There are literally dozens and dozens of mines and deposits discussed. I count over 130 of them, all given some discussion. Amazing. That is where the real value in this report lies. The list includes:
    Beaver Creek mines
    Chance mine
    Sunday mine
    Nederland area mines
    Sherwood Gulch mines
    Illinois mine
    Beddig mine
    Conger mine
    Crow mine
    Rake-off mine
    Clyde mine
    Spiderleg mine
    St. Elmo mine
    Hurricane Hill area mines
    Vasco mines
    Cold spring mine
    And many others!
I have to emphasize how scarce these are. Among Colorado reports, this one is highly desirable, and seldom seen. It is sure to be of interest to mineral collectors, historians, and residents of this beautiful district.
As always, please read the condition notes.
I recommend removing the maps when reading the text to reduce strain on the back cover.
