Description
SCARCE CLASIC!! GREAT MAP!! GREAT ROCKS!!This is USGS Bulletin 1163-A,
Bedrock Geology of the Salem Quadrangle and Vicinity, Massachusetts
. Published in 1964, there can’t be many of these around. It consists of the 79-page book and the original large full-color geologic map.
This is a very interesting area that contains the locale where the first attempt to mine copper in the English Colonies of North America occurred! The geology is interesting, with a variety of igneous and metamorphic rocks present in the area. Of particular interest for many years have been the alkalic rocks of the area, which host such minerals as sodalite and nepheline.
Just as an example, Mindat.org has this list of minerals for a locale at Salem:
Aegirine
Aenigmatite
Albite
'Albite-Anorthite Series’ var: Labradorite
'Apatite'
Arfvedsonite
Augite
Biotite
Cancrinite
'Chrysotile'
'Delessite'
Dolomite
Enstatite
Ferrohornblende
Glaucophane
Hematite
'Hornblende'
'Hypersthene'
'Limonite'
Magnetite
Microcline
Molybdenite
Natrolite
Nepheline
'Olivine'
Orthoclase
'Perthite'
Pyrite
Riebeckite
Sanidine
Sodalite
Titanite
Zircon
That’s quite a list! And it’s all right underfoot. This is a very cool and scarce publication on an interesting and historic area, and it is in excellent condition with only the lightest cover wear to report. It will probably be a long time before another of these goes by on eBay!
As always, please read t
he condition notes.
