Description
SCARCE OLD ITEM!!This is USGS Bulletin 660-J,
Possibilities for Manganese Ore on Certain Undeveloped Tracts in Shenandoah Valley, Virginia
.” Published in 1918, there can't be many of these around. The publication consists of the original 34-page book that discusses six under-explored and undeveloped tracts of land where manganese deposits were either discovered or potentially present. The areas discussed include...
SW of Elkton
Near Sherando and Lyndhurst, Augusta county
NE of Elkton at Grindstone and Piney mountains
3 miles NE of Waynesboro
South of Luray
The Siebel mine near Happy Creek station, east of Front Royal
Each of these areas has a small map in the text, as well as a nice description of the location and geology. Some of these areas went on to be developed as mines with a variety of minerals. General characteristics of the region and its geology are described. Its a pretty cool.
This is a cool old report on a little known mining region, and would be of interest to geologists, local residents, geologists and the like. A scarce old item.
