    Description

SCARCE ITEM!!  OVER FIFTY YEARS OLD!!
This is USGS Professional Paper 519,
Geology and Uranium Deposits of the Laguna District, New Mexico
    .
    Published in 1967, t
his 117-page book comes complete with
    all nine
of the original maps. This area is known for the famous Jackpile mine, which produced more uranium than any other mine in the United States at the time, and possibly the entire world! The district is mostly within Valencia county.
    The
    uranium
ore is mostly hosted in the Morrison Formation, which is somewhat folded and faulted in the area. Some lesser deposits occur in the Entrada sandstone and the Todilto limestone. This report takes a close look and unravels the complex geology of the area. Several of the maps are partial color and show interesting details of the deposits. See all the pictures, as I've included al the maps in the photos.
There is an entire section devoted to the mineralogy of the deposits, discussing oxidized and unoxidized ores and their minerals. A number of interesting minerals are mentioned in the text, including:
    Coffinite
    Uraninite
    Pyrite
    Wurtzite
    Covellite
    Cobaltite
    Zippeite
    Metatyuyamunite
    Tyuyamunite
    Autunite
    Phosphuranylite
    Uranophane
    Carnotite
Some of these are colorful, collectible minerals worth looking for!
In addition to the Jackpile mine,
other deposits are also discussed, including:
    Windwhip
    mine
    Woodrow
    mine
    Chavez mine
    Sandy mine
and some other small mines and occurrences.
This is a great old report on this interesting area, sure to be of interest to mineral collectors, historians, and residents of the area.
