Geology of the Michaud and Pocatello Quadrangles, Bannock and Power Counties, Idaho
. This publication consists of the 88-page book and the original large, full color geologic map, which shows two full quadrangles at a scale of 1:4800 (4000 feet to the inch). Published in 1976 there can’t be many of these around anymore.
This
large
report
discusses all the formations in this area. There are thick sequences of sedimentary rocks and low grade metamorphic rocks. They range in age from Precambrian through Paleozoic, but there are additional younger rocks including the Snake river plain basalts and related rocks. The structure is complex with thrust faulting and various generations of normals faults. The area was of interest in this study as a place where numerous complex relationships could be resolved. The resulting story is a long and complex history of this part of the world which is summarized in a six page section near the end.
Copper, silver and gold were mined in some places. Copper
carbonates
are reported at some locales. Galena is also known from some of the mining areas.
Pocatello is near the middle of the map, making this of interest to many people living there, and in surrounding areas.
Note that I am also offering the similar report on the Rock and Arbon Quadrangles that adjoins this area, and the report on the American Falls area, which adjoins this area on another side. All these were mapped as part of a large USGS program to understand the area better.
