This is USGS Professional Paper 344-B,
Anorthosite and Associated Rocks in the Boehls Butte Quadrangle and Vicinity, Idaho
. Published in 1963, this is a scarce scarce item! This publication consists of a 78-page book and the original large full color geologic map.
This publication describes this unusual anorthosite occurrence in the mountains of Idaho. It is a strange area that is not well understood. Most anorthosite is associated with mafic-ultramafic intrusions, but these are absent in the area. Instead the anorthosite rocks seem to have a complex stratigraphic relationship with their enclosing rocks, prompting some unusual ideas about their formation which are discussed in the text.
This is a very in-depth look at this area, as indicated by the length of the text. The color map of this area is large and quite interesting. This is one interesting area and offers some unusual rocks including anorthosite, garnet amphibolite and some interesting schists.
Later research showed these rocks to be some of the oldest in Idaho – Over 2 billion years old.
This is an uncommon publication and a great opportunity for the armchair geologist or mineral collector!
