HUGE COLORFUL MAP!! ONLY ONE AVAILABLE!!This is USGS Bulletin 1311-A,
Quaternary
Geology of Long and Bear Valleys, West Central Idaho
. This 22-page report published in 1970 discusses young sedimentary formations that lie within these two large valley systems. It comes complete with tow large full color maps, one of which is over four feet tall.
This area was extensively dredged for
monazite
and
euxinite
in the fifties. These slightly radioactive heavy minerals weathered out of the Idaho Batholith in the uplands and were concentrated in the young valley-fill formations. This study sought to bring greater understanding to the younger formations in hopes of understanding the distribution of the radioactive placer deposits containing these minerals. The maps are large, very colorful, and very helpful in making the story clear. Diagrams, photos and maps within the text fill in the gaps. Its a great study that will really put these large valleys in context. Good stuff for anyone living in these valleys, or just interested in the geology of Idaho. McCall, Donnelly, and Cascade are in Long Valley. Amazingly, Bear Valley is in Bear Valley!
