    This is USGS Bulletin 1391-E,
    Studies Related to Wilderness Primitive Areas - Areas Contiguous to the Uncompahgre Primitive Area, Southwest Colorado
    . This large report consists of the 126-page book, a separate map case over an inch thick, and three large maps that show different aspects of the same large areas. The maps are all about four feet tall.
    Published in 1972, there were probably never many of these around.
    The area covered in this work is about
    215 square miles
    . The Uncompahgre wilderness area is abutted by adjacent areas that were also candidates for Wilderness designation. In the fifth photo above, these areas are colored darker gray in the upper left of the map area. It is beautiful country that could be made even more interesting by bringing this along on any backpacking or hiking trip. It includes a lot of high mountain country. The text describes the geologic units in detail and discusses other aspects of the area.
    Rocks in the area range from Paleozoic to Tertiary in age. The geology of the area is covered in detail and the mineral resources are discussed as well.
    Areas nearby saw historic production of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc. A number of small prospects are noted on maps in the text, and some maps of their underground workings are included. Almost all of the area is mountainous terrain.  All in all it is a scarce and very interesting and complete work on a beautiful area. Don’t miss it!
