This area is loved for its amazing scenery along the Green river. The area is renowned for the varied geology and scenery with cliffs, mountains, gorges and plains all juxtaposed. Major Powell made one of the early explorations of the area.
All the rock units are described and they range from Precambrian to Recent. The earliest rocks are the Red Cliff quartzite which has been folded, faulted, and intruded by various igneous rocks. It contains schist and amphibolite as well as other rock types. Younger rocks consists of sequences of varying age and composition, mostly sedimentary. The area is at the NE corner of Utah with a bit in Colorado and a sliver in Wyoming. There is an area where a few pegmatites contain
tourmaline
, apatite and a little beryl
. There is also mention of some
petrified wood
.
Garnet, staurolite, and kyanite
occur in another area. There is a photo of the staurolite rock that shows some pretty nice crystals. There's something for everyone!
This is a great book to tell you all about the whole area.
