  • Condition: Pages are uncut, so they have rough edges. Cover is brittle and has light general wear. Stamp and sticker on covers. College library placard on back cover. There is incipient wear-through along the spine, but the binding is tight. Pages are yellowed but unmarked. Back cover is also worn around the edges.

    Earthquakes in California in 1889
    Published in 1890, this is a scarce item. This 25-page book details many earthquakes that occurred in the Golden State in 1889. There is an interesting section in the beginning detailing the rating system for earthquakes which was the Rossi-Forel scale, a qualitative scale based on visible and felt effects of quakes.
    The book details many quakes large and small throughout the state, some in greater detail than others. There are some interesting accounts, like
    "chickens shaken from their perches"
    , and
    "the entire population was aroused,"
    and more fun statements like those! Its good stuff you don't find any more and make this much more than just a dry report. It's a great old report that's fun to read. You won't find another on Ebay or elsewhere.
    As always, please read the condition notes. This was issues with uncut edges so is rough edged.
