    Description

    This is USGS Bulletin 1311-E,
The Eagle Valley Evaporite, Northwest Colorado - A Regional Synthesis
. This report consists of the 37-page book and all three of the original geologic maps. Published in 1971, there were probably never many of these around. Two of the map sheets are large and full color. One of them shows six small maps of the same area with various aspects of the formation in each one. I've provided pictures of some of those individual maps. Another sheet is a large color map with cross section, showing the general geology and layering. A third map shows the location and topography of the area and the distribution of the formation.
The Eagle Valley evaporite consists of rocks from an ancient Pennsylvanian sea that evaporated, leaving its salts and silts behind. The resulting formation is called evaporite, and consists of gypsum, anhydrite, halite, and a few other other related minerals. The rocks have been through the same tectonic mill that a lot of Colorado went through, but the soft, easily-deformed rocks of the
evaporite behaved very differently from their more sturdy counterparts, resulting in increased folding. From start to finish, the whole thing makes for an interesting story, and the maps really help bring it to life.
It makes for a nice report with some cool
    maps
and a great story. Nice to find it complete with all the maps.
