    Description

Here is one of the great ones! This is USGS Bulletin 948-B,
Chromite Deposits Near Seiad and McGuffy Creeks, Siskiyou County, California.
Published in 1949, there can’t be many of these around anymore. This publication consists of the 44-page book and, amazingly
    all eighteen
of the original maps! This is the larger of the two USGS bulletins on this interesting area, and is one of the scarcer reports because of its size and the number of maps. The maps and book are in excellent condition.
At least one of the mines was developed with underground workings.
Chromite, serpentine, anthophyllite, talc, tremolite, chalcedony, and magnetite
have been found in these mines, as well as the scarce,
rich green chrome garnet called uvarovite
    . In addition,
garnet crystals are found in pegmatites
in the area! Perhaps even more minerals have since been found in this area. In addition, quite a large number of sites in this area are discussed in the book, including:
    Kangaroo Mountain deposit (Anniversary Claim)
    Emma Bell prospect
Blue Eagle and Black eagle claims
    Seiad Creek mine
    Ladd mine
    Fairview mine (Hamburg Bar mine)
    McGuffy Creek area
    Veta Chica claim
    Cerro Colorado claim
    And Others!
This publication makes not only a great guide for the collector wanting to visit this area, but also a unique historical record of this district. This is a scarce publication on an interesting and historical mining area. There is little wear other than edge-wear and a little crinkling of the cover and pages. Other than that it is in great shape, and I have to mention that in publications of this age, having every one of the original maps still present
is really unusual, especially when there were eighteen maps to start with. This is a scarce opportunity for the collector of California minerals, the historian, or anyone that wants to give the place a crack!
