SCARCE INTERESTING ITEM!! ONLY ONE AVAILABLE!!This is USGS Professional Paper 361,
Cenozoic Mammal Horizons of Western North America.
Published in 1909, this is a scarce interesting item. This 138-page book delves into the geologic formations, landforms, and geologic history relating to mammal fossil locales in the western US. It provides a high level view of the fossil locations, generally describing large regions and strata sections that contain various sets of mammal fossils. There seems to be a bit of focus on South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska.
There is a general and climatic history of the Cenozoic in the region, that then goes on to describe seven major phases of faunas as they occur in the western region. There are two nice fold out maps in the text plus an interesting strats diagram on glossy paper. All three are pictured above.
This is a cool old book that really gives a unique understanding of how successions of animals progressed through time in the western US. I've never seen another book like it. Most talk about individual animals, or ecosystems. This one takes it a level higher and looks at the whole sequence through time. A very cool old book.
This would be a great item for a western residents, historians, or armchair geologist looking to understand the mammalian fossil record better.
