FEW LEFT!!!This is USGS Professional Paper 318,
Occurrence of Nonpegmatite Beryllium in the United States
. Published in 1959, this is a sought-after report because of the scores of localities investigated. It consists of a 198 page book and all five of the original maps.
This report summarizes work to identify sources of beryllium other than pegmatites. Beryllium is used in the nuclear industry for something like neutron absorption, and was pretty important during the Cold War. But domestic and even international supplies of beryllium were inadequate for demand at the time. Almost all beryllium was mined from pegmatites, and since that wasn't enough, they went looking elsewhere.
Geologists visited scores of locations around the country, sampling various parts of many different ore deposit types. For each locale, some description of the mine or prospect and its minerals is usually give, and many of these have geology maps along with them. The result is this large volume containing an unbelievable wealth of information on some well known, but many lesser known mines and prospects of various kinds. It is a cool book that would make a great guide for a mineral collector looking to try out some new locations. Mineral collecting is all about the locations, so if you have a work like this, giving background on tons of them, you have an amazing resource. Just look at the photos of some pages (pictures 7-10) to see the kind of details this book contains. It goes on and on like that!
