Description
ONE OF THE CLASSICS!!! HARDER AND HARDER TO FIND!!This is USGS Bulletin 1011,
Pegmatites of the Crystal Mountain District, Larimer County, Colorado
. Published in 1955, there can't be many of these around. It consists of a huge
185-page
book
AND ALL THIRTEEN OF THE ORIGINAL MAPS
, all in excellent condition. All the maps come in a pocket in the back of the book. This publication documents over 1300 pegmatites specifically by number and keys them to the maps that are provided. Beryl is found in 350 of them - an astounding 27% of the total. The district is compact - just a few square miles - and the detailed maps provide information on many of the features of the area. The well-known Hyatt mine is part of this district. The entire area is in the National Forest, so collecting should not be a problem. The maps are so cool I thought I'd list them here to give you an idea what a great deal you are looking at here.
1. Index Map of the United States, Showing Principal Pegmatite Mining Districts
2. Geologic Map of the Hyatt Area
3. Geologic Cross Section of the Hyatt Area
4. Pegmatites Discordant in Schist, Hyatt Area
5. Index Map to Pegmatites in the Hyatt Area
6. Disribution of Omega Indices of Beryl in the Hyatt Area
7. Distribution of Beryl-Bearing Pegmatites in the Hyatt Area
8. Shapes and Grain Boundary Relationships of Beryl and Other Minerals as Observed in Drill Core
9. Geologic Map of the Hyatt Pegmatite
10. Geologic Cross Sections of the Hyatt Pegmatite
11. Geologic Map of the Big Boulder Prospect
12. Geologic Cross Sections of the Big Boulder Prospect
13. Geologic Map and Cross Sections of the Buckhorn Mica Mine
Obviously the really cool maps are the ones showing the precise locations of beryl-bearing pegmatites in the area. Map number 5 shows all the pegmatites in the area and is keyed to tables in the book describing them. Map number 7 shows just the beryl-bearing ones. The area covered by the maps is only about six square miles, and large portions of the area are just packed with pegmatites, including beryl-bearing ones. Also, the Hyatt mine had quite a bit of blue-green beryl and was a pretty sizable operation. This looks like a very cool area. I wish I lived close so I could check it out myself! Just look at this list of minerals found in the Crystal Mountain District:
Albite
Alluaudite
Beryl
Bismuthinite
Columbite
Ferrisicklerite
Ferrotantalite
Fluorapatite var: Mangan-apatite
Graftonite
Heterosite
Hydroxylapatite
Microcline
Muscovite
Purpurite
Quartz
Triphylite
Triplite
Vivianite
Here is a rare opportunity to get a very old geologic report on a geologically interesting area, and considering its age of nearly fifty years its condition is amazing.
