    Description

    This is USGS Bulletin 855,
Geology and Mineral Resource of the Bellefonte Quadrangle, Pennsylvania
. Published in 1936, there can't be many of these around. The publication consists of a 111-page book and all three of the pocket plates, which includes a large full color map, a sheet of full color cross sections and a B&W correlation dia
    gram.
Originally issued in soft covers with terrible acidic paper, this one was saved by being rebound to nice hardcovers before incurring any damage. It is in excellent condition - as good as you could expect to find in any book its age.
    This area in
the middle of Pennsylvania has a complete section of rocks of Cambrian through Pennsylvanian age. They are gently to tightly folded with some minor thrust faults. All this is detailed in the text, and beautifully portrayed in the map and cross sections.
The area is known for a number of resources including:
    Iron ore
    Limestone,
    Something called Ganister!
    Lead, Zinc, Silver and Barite
    Fluorite and
    Pyrite
    And a few other commodities.
One quarry in the area cut through a vein containing some interesting minerals including:
    Galena
    Pyromorphite
    Sphalerite
    Barite
    Pyrite
And a little silver was assayed as well!
Purple fluorite occurs elsewhere in small amounts with some pyrite.
This is a cool old book with a nice vintage map. The map has a classic style they moved away from in later years and would look great framed along with the cross sections. A great old report of interest to geologists, local residents and historians. Nice to find it in hard covers. You won't find a better one.
