SCARCE OLD ITEM!! OVER 100 YEARS OLD!!This is USGS Professional Paper 98-T,
The Reef-Coral Fauna of Carrizo Creek, Imperial County, California, And Its Significance.
Published in 1917, this is a rare old item. This 41-page book comes complete with nine additional plates of photos of the amazingly well-preserved corals from this area.
The locales are southwest west of the Salton Sea in certain canyons. The limestones in the area preserve amazing examples of a number of coral types. Many of the fossils are large and beautiful examples that would look great in a collection. There are dozens of photos of these fossils, many at actual size, with close-ups of some showing the features.
But there is more to this report. There is considerable discussion about the age of the fossils, which were originally designated as Cretaceous. Further work shows they are much younger. The discussion is a great example of science in progress and really fills in the background on these cool localities and their fossils.
The locations where there were collected are shown on a map in a enough detail to get you in the neighborhood. Combined with some of the photos I think you could find collecting areas with out too much trouble.
Overall, this is a very cool publication that just might lead you to some genuinely awesome fossil specimens. This is a scarce item, as I mentioned. I have rarely handled these in years of dealing in these kinds of publications. Don’t miss this one!
