    Description

This item consists of five USGS publications on the geology of Alaska. The photos are in the order they are described below. The publications are:
USGS Circular 300, Reconnaissance for Radioactive Deposits in the Darby Mountains, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, 1948.
    This 7-page book
comes complete with the original map!
This was published in 1953. (The studies were done in 1948) Map is in very good condition. Details numerous prospect areas by name. Map shows sample locations and details of the geology. The area contains uranium, thorium, niobium, and rare-earth minerals.
    USGS Circular 479,
Beryllium Deposits of the Western Seward Peninsula, Alaska.
Published in 1963, there can’t be many of these around. This 18-page book discusses the occurrence of beryllium in vein systems throughout a large area in the hills of this area near Nome, Alaska. A number of interesting minerals are present in this area, including:
    Fluorite
    Diaspore
    Chrysoberyl
    Mica
    Tourmaline
    Hematite
    Phenakite (?)
    Bertrandite (?)
    Milarite (?)
    Tetrahedrite (?)
    Todorokite (?)
These minerals occur in veins, pipes, and lodes throughout an area of several square miles. Base metal veins and tin minerals have also been found in the area. Some of the areas have been mined or prospected to some extent, others not at all. Propsects and occurrences in this area include the following.
Camp Creek – Lost River mine
    Lost River Valley
    Rapid River
    Tin Creek
    Bessie and Mabel prospect
Lost River – Brooks Mountain area
    King River
    East of Tin Creek
    Ear Mountain
    Cape Mountain
    Potato Mountain
    Black Mountain
This is a great book on an interesting area.

USGS Circular 614, Metalliferous Deposits Near Granite Mountain, Eastern Seward Peninsula, Alaska.
This 19-page book was published in 1969. Discusses deposits in the areas of the Upper Peace River and Bear Creek. Metals of interest in this area are silver, lead and zinc. This is a very interesting report on a large mineralized area.
    Photos 7-8.
USGS Circular 617, Results of Geological and Geochemical Investigations in an Area Northwest of the Chulitna River, Central Alaska Range.
Published in 1969, this 19-page book documents gold, copper, silver, nickel, chromium, tin, zinc, and lead occurrences in this area of Alaska. It contains maps, descriptions of the geology, and tables of analytical results from samples taken in the area. Makes an important addition to the geology and mineral deposits of Alaska, and just interesting reading too! Minerals mentioned in the text include:
    Gold
    Chromite
    Tourmaline
    Muscovite
    Quartz
    Pyrite
    Arsenopyrite
    Galena
    Sphalerite
    Chalcopyrite
This is an interesting book documenting numerous mined and unmined areas and would make a great addition to any library on the geology of Alaska.

Ok, so asbestos is not the most popular stuff any more, but the geology still makes for interesting reading. It is USGS Circular 611,
Asbestos Occurrence in the Eagle C-4 Quadrangle, Alaska
. Published in 1969, this short book documents the geology of a newly (then, anyway) discovered deposit of asbestos in a fairly remote part of East Central Alaska, west of the Yukon river. Makes for interesting reading even if there’s no economic importance to it any more. This short book is in excellent condition. It’s kind of sad, actually, because there are only a couple types of asbestos that are dangerous, and the type mentioned here is not one of them. Oh well.
