    Description

VINTAGE NEW YORK GEOLOGY!!  FORGOTTEN MINING HISTORY!!
This is New York State Museum Bulletin 283,
The Gypsum Resources and Gypsum Industry of New York
. Published in 1929, this 188-page book contains loads of information on gypsum, the geology of the New York gypsum
    deposits
, its uses, the companies that were active in the industry, the mining, and the processing of gypsum. It contains numerous illustrations and photos. There is also a small fold out map showing where the gypsum bearing formations occur across the state.
I used to live in this area and collect gypsum crystals at a small quarry near my house. However I had no idea gypsum was a huge industry in the region, complete with well-equipped underground mines, huge processing facilities, and an economy all its own. It was a big deal. This book provides a complete picture of the whole industry, starting with the mineralogy and geology of gypsum through the mining and processing. There is a lot of forgotten history in this, with many locations, place names and company names. It is fascinating reading for a geologist, mineral collector, historian, or local resident. Only one available. Don't miss it!
