NEW YORK GEOLOGY MOHAWK VALLEY, ALAGAL REEFS, CRINOIDS Vintage 1938 Hard Cover

$ 14.25

Availability: 20 in stock
  • Condition: Nice hard cover with a library mark on the spine. Very light brushing and soiling of the boards. Original soft cover has a red stamp on it. Large map has a 4" tear - not surprising as the map is really too large to have been inserted as a fold out - It should have been a pocket map. Folded cross section has a small tear in a crease line. A few light pencil marks in page margins. No other marks in text. Binding is tight. A good example of this, nicely preserved in hard covers.

    Description

    VINTAGE NEW YORK GEOLOGY IN RARE HARD COVER!!
    This is New York State Museum Bulletin 315, containing three interesting articles. Published in 1938, this book totals 126 pages. It was originally issued in soft covers, but this was rebound to hard covers before seeing much wear. The original covers are still preserved. The three articles
    are:
    Algal Barrier Reefs of the Ozarkian of New York, with a Chapter on the Importance of Coralline Algae as Reef Builders through the Ages.
    71 pages with numerous photos of these interesting rocks. The Ozarkian is an antiquated name for the Late Cambian into the Early Ordovician. These algal reefs consisted of large areas of stromatolites, interesting looking formations with concentric banding. They are well exposed in some parks in New York. Photos 3-6.
    Additional Notes on Previously Described Devonian Crinoids.
    7 pages. A short articles with a nice plate of photos of some crinoid fossils. Photos 6-8.
    Faulting in the Mohawk Valley.
    38 Pages. An interesting article about faulting in a region just south of the Adirondack uplift. Comes with a large foldout map showing the main fault zones, a folded plate depicting a cross section of the geology with the faults, and photo plate of one of the areas. The area is north of a line between Albany and Utica, and generally north of the Mohawk river, as shown in a location map within the text. Photos 9-12
    Of the articles, the Algal Reef and Mohawk Faulting ones are probably of the greatest interest. Note there are three pages of index, and a couple blank pages between articles that make up for the total page count.
    A cool, rare book for the New York geologist, paleontologist, fossil collector, local resident, or historian. Rare to find a vintage copy in the hard covers.
