  • Condition: An original binding by Stoakley, Cambridge, the Binder for Trinity College, Cambridge. Hinges are intact, some weakness, but not loose as my scans should indicate. All my 19th Century volumes of this series used the same Binder. This is a large 4to, 88pp, 5 plates & 44pp, 2 plates. Some plates have a small 1 inch Trinity College oval hand stamp on the reverse. A Marathon Oil bookplate on the inside front cover covering a larger Trinity College hand stamp. The binding is very good for age. You can call it good+. The contents are crisp, bright and near fine. No damp stains, no damage to contents or plates. Students or Professors did not 'line up' to check this volume out. The better known Origin of Species First Edition of 1859. The volume measures 11.25 inches x 8.75 inches x 5/8 inches thick.

    Description

This is a pre 1859 Origin of Species printing by Charles Darwin by nine years.
Origin of Species printed 1250 copies.  Also is the best known of Charles Darwin's publications.  This bound volume describes barnacles.
If you have questions about this volume, I am open for any.  I cannot scan the plates or take any more risk than offer the title page scans.  Ruining the hinges is not my purpose in the attempt to sell this copy.  Other volumes, the covers are already loose as the leather dries out after... 171 years (1851 and 1854 for these still intact).
Palaeontographical Society of London: Monograph 13 (1851) and Monograph 30 (1854).
The dark shadow of the title page scan is due to the page NOT PRESSED FLAT onto my scanner to avoid damaging the leather hinges.
