book is many things - A road log guide through the Mother Lode Country, a history of discovery and mining, a photo atlas of notable sites, and a geologic treatise on the region. See picture 5 for the table of contents. This book was reprinted a few times, but this appears to be a first edition, as there are no notations of second printing, etc. on the title page as I've seen in some.
This book is so cool! There are numerous maps supporting the road logs and noting significant locations. The text goes along with it filling in the details. There are chapters of history covering the discovery and mining of gold. Other chapters are on the geology and formation of quartz veins with gold. Published on the centennial of the discovery of gold at Sutter's mill in 1848, this was created to be the complete guide to the history, geology and natural history of the area. Many specific mines are named, located on the maps, and discussed in the text. A great book that would be of interest to many people! A nice hard cover to keep for years!
